Background of the Study
Online formative assessments have emerged as a critical tool in modern education, offering continuous feedback that enhances learning progress and informs instructional strategies. In Kebbi Central LGA, Kebbi State, educational institutions have begun to incorporate digital formative assessment techniques to monitor student progress, identify learning gaps, and facilitate personalized instruction. These assessments—delivered through online quizzes, interactive assignments, and real-time feedback platforms—have been shown to significantly improve student engagement and academic performance (Adewale, 2023). The shift from traditional paper-based assessments to online formats has been accelerated by the increasing availability of digital devices and internet connectivity in the region. Online formative assessments offer the dual advantage of providing immediate feedback to students while enabling educators to tailor their teaching approaches based on real-time data (Bello, 2023). Moreover, these assessments are flexible and can be integrated into various subjects and educational levels, making them a versatile tool in the modern classroom. Despite their potential benefits, the implementation of online formative assessments in Kebbi Central LGA faces several challenges. These include technical issues such as system reliability, user-friendliness of assessment platforms, and the need for continuous professional development for educators (Chinedu, 2024). Additionally, concerns about the authenticity and integrity of online assessments persist, as the digital environment may facilitate academic dishonesty if proper safeguards are not in place. Socio-economic factors also play a role, as not all students have equal access to the necessary technology to participate effectively in online assessments. This study aims to explore the impact of online formative assessments on students' learning progress in Kebbi Central LGA, examining both the benefits and the challenges associated with their use. It will investigate how these assessments influence student learning, motivation, and overall academic achievement. By understanding these dynamics, the research intends to provide recommendations for optimizing online formative assessment practices, thereby contributing to more effective and engaging teaching methodologies in the region (Durojaiye, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the promising potential of online formative assessments to enhance learning progress, several critical challenges inhibit their effective implementation in Kebbi Central LGA. One major issue is the technological reliability of assessment platforms. Many schools in the area report frequent system downtimes and technical glitches, which disrupt the assessment process and hinder the provision of timely feedback to students (Ekwueme, 2023). Furthermore, educators often lack sufficient training in using digital assessment tools, leading to underutilization and inefficiencies in monitoring student performance. Another significant challenge is the authenticity of online assessments; without proper proctoring mechanisms, the risk of academic dishonesty increases, thereby compromising the integrity of the evaluation process (Femi, 2024). In addition, there exists a disparity in access to digital devices and stable internet connectivity among students, which creates an uneven playing field and may skew assessment outcomes. These challenges are compounded by limited institutional support and the absence of a standardized framework for conducting online formative assessments. As a result, the full potential of these digital tools to provide actionable insights into student learning progress remains under-realized. Moreover, there is a lack of comprehensive studies that evaluate the long-term effects of online formative assessments on overall academic achievement in the region. This study seeks to bridge this gap by systematically examining the efficacy of online formative assessments and identifying the key factors that impede their successful implementation. The findings of this research are expected to inform policymakers and educators on how to overcome these challenges and optimize assessment strategies for improved student learning outcomes in Kebbi Central LGA (Gambo, 2024).
